MgO-Doped β″-Al₂O₃ is the benchmark high-temperature ceramic solid electrolyte utilized in advanced high-energy-density sodium-ion batteries, notably Sodium-Sulfur (Na-S) and Sodium-Metal Chloride (ZEBRA) systems.
The main features of MgO-Doped β″-Al₂O₃ are: (1) Phase Stabilization: Stoichiometric sodium beta-alumina naturally forms a mixture of β'- and β''-phases. Because the β''-phase exhibits significantly higher room- and elevated-temperature sodium-ion conductivity, aliovalent doping with magnesium oxide (MgO, typically 0.7-1.0 wt% Mg^{2+}) or lithium oxide is essential to stabilize the pure highly conductive rhombohedral β''-crystal lattice and prevent destructive phase transitions during high-temperature sintering. (2) Ionic Conductivity: Delivers exceptional sodium-ion conductivity at elevated operating temperatures, scaling from 0.2-0.4 S/cm at 300°C down to lower values at ambient conditions, allowing for high-power charge and discharge rates. (3) Chemical Stability: Demonstrates outstanding thermodynamic stability against molten sodium metal anodes and aggressive positive electrode melts (NaAlCl2 or molten sulfur/polysulfides) at operating temperatures of 250-350°C.
