Vanadyl Sulfate Hydrate (VOSO4 * H2O) is the standard high-purity precursor salt used to formulate the aqueous electrolyte in all-vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). Dissolved in sulfuric or mixed-acid media, it provides the tetravalent vanadium (V^IV, VO^{2+}) needed to establish both the positive and negative active electrolytes.
A VRFB exploits four continuous oxidation states of vanadium, eliminating cross-contamination across the ion-exchange membrane (e.g., Nafion):
