Diffusion dialysis (DD) using specialized anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) is a green, energy-saving membrane separation technology widely used to recover free acids (such as HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, or HF) from industrial waste streams while rejecting dissolved heavy metal salts. Unlike electrodialysis, which requires an external direct-current (DC) power source, diffusion dialysis is driven entirely by a concentration gradient, making it a zero-power-input process for fluid separation

To excel in waste acid recovery, diffusion dialysis membranes must possess specific physicochemical properties: (1) High Acid Dialysis Coefficient (U): Measures how fast the acid permeates the membrane. High permeability ensures a compact stack footprint and high processing capacity. (2) High Separation Factor (S): The ratio of acid permeability to salt permeability. A high separation factor ensures minimal metal leakage into the recovered acid product. (3) Strong Acid and Oxidation Resistance: Because feed solutions often contain aggressive mineral acids and oxidizing agents, the polymer backbone (typically fluorinated polymers like PVDF-based backbones or highly cross-linked polystyrene/polyethylene matrices) must resist chemical degradation over long operating cycles. (4) Low Swelling Ratio: Maintains dimensional stability when exposed to drastic concentration shifts between strong acid feeds and water.

Working Mechanism

The whole diffusion dialysis is consisted of a series of dialysis and diffusion chambers that was separated by an anion exchange membrane. The waste acid solution and receiving solution (eg: tap water) was fed into chambers and the anions (also bring protons) from the waste acid will go through the membrane and enter into the tap water to complete the acid recovery.
