Zinc foam chips (or porous 3D zinc foam structures cut/punched into specific dimensions) represent an advanced approach to designing high-performance 3D anode electrodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Replacing traditional, planar zinc foil with an open-cell, high-surface-area 3D porous architecture fundamentally alters how zinc plates and strips during cycling, directly addressing the primary failure modes of aqueous zinc systems.

The key structural features and functions of zinc foam chip as 3D anode for AZIB are: (1) Reduction of Local Current Density: In flat zinc foils, current concentrates at microscopic protrusions or edges, driving rapid, localized dendrite growth. A 3D zinc foam distributes the effective electrochemically active surface area across a massive internal network, drastically lowering the local current density (mA/cm}^2) at any given point. (2) Confined Plating and Internal Void Volume: Instead of plating outward into the separator (which causes short-circuits), Zn^{2+} ions preferentially nucleate and deposit inside the conductive pores of the foam. The interconnected void space accommodates volume changes during deep stripping and plating cycles. (3) Lowered Nucleation Overpotential: The abundant crystalline boundaries and high-energy sites on the zinc foam framework provide favorable thermodynamic nucleation points, reducing the overpotential required for uniform zinc deposition.
