A Three-Dimensional (3D) Shaker Mixer & Mill (often called a Turbula mixer or a multidimensional shaker) is a versatile laboratory instrument that utilizes a complex, non-linear motion. Unlike standard vibratory mills that move in a single plane, the 3D shaker subjects the container to a combination of rotation, translation, and inversion based on the Schatz geometric principle.

The mixer holds the jar in a specialized basket that moves in a "figure-eight" or "rhythmic inversion" pattern. (1) No Centrifugal Force: Unlike planetary mills, the motion is designed to prevent the materials from being pinned to the walls. (2) Complete Inversion: The sample is constantly turned over, ensuring that even materials with extreme density differences (e.g., sulfur vs. transition metals) do not stratify or segregate. (3) Gentle vs. High Energy: Mixing Mode: Without grinding media, it is a gentle mixer that preserves the particle shape and size of delicate binders or carbon nanotubes. Milling Mode: By adding grinding balls, the 3D motion creates high-velocity impacts from every possible angle, making it an effective "high-energy" mill for rapid particle size reduction.
