A Vibratory Disk Mill (also commonly known as a Vibratory Cup Mill or Shatterbox) is a high-speed pulverizer designed to reduce hard, brittle, or fibrous materials to analytical fineness—typically sub-75 microns—in less than two minutes.
The mill uses a "puck and ring" system housed inside a heavy, reinforced grinding set (the "cup"). (1) Action: The machine utilizes a powerful motor to create high-frequency horizontal oscillations. This causes the internal grinding elements (a solid puck and often a hollow ring) to accelerate and strike the walls of the jar. (2) Force: The material is pulverized through a combination of intense impact and extreme pressure/friction as the puck and ring slide and collide. (3) Speed: Because the grinding elements are so heavy relative to the sample size, the energy density is incredibly high.
