For fundamental electrochemistry, choosing a portable single-channel potentiostat depends on whether your priority is ultra-compact field mobility, wide potential windows for non-aqueous electrolytes, or high-frequency Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS).

The Critical Selection Criteria for Fundamental Work: (1) Compliance Voltage vs. Solvent Window: Standard aqueous CVs require low compliance (±3 V to ±5 V). If evaluating redox couples in organic or non-aqueous media (e.g., acetonitrile, ionic liquids) with high uncompensated resistance (Ru), prioritize units with at least > ±10 V compliance to avoid current saturation or clipped peaks. (2) Low-Current Resolution vs. Electrode Scale: If working with microelectrodes (UMEs) for kinetic or diffusion studies, ensure the lowest current range reaches sub-nanoamp levels. For standard macro-electrodes (e.g., 3 mm glassy carbon), ranges up to 30–100 mA are sufficient. (3) Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS): For interfacial capacitance, charge-transfer resistance (R_ct), or solid/membrane conductivity, verify that high-frequency limits reach ≥ 100 kHz to capture high-frequency intercepts accurately. (4) Connection Architecture: Verify support for standard 3-electrode (WE, CE, RE) setups, with sense leads for 4-point measurements if testing through-plane membrane resistances or solid-electrolyte pellets.
