Add-Ons
Mini and pocket-sized potentiostats optimized for screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) prioritize direct edge-connector mating, low power consumption, and portability for point-of-care, environmental, and biosensor testing.
The Critical Considerations for SPE Testing: (1) Connector Interface: Most commercial SPEs feature standard 2.54 mm pitch contact tabs (WE, RE, CE). Verify whether the mini potentiostat has an integrated slot (e.g., Sensit BT, ECWP100) or requires an external clamshell/boxed cable adapter. Integrated slots eliminate cable noise but make immersion into stirred beakers awkward without an extension cable. (2) Compliance Voltage & Dynamic Range: Miniature, USB- or coin-cell-powered potentiostats often have internal supply rails clamped to ~±2.0 V or ±3.0 V. This is well-suited for aqueous sensing (glucose, enzymatic redox mediators, ferricyanide), but insufficient for wide-window organic electrolytes or high-resistance thin-film traces requiring ≥ ±5 V compliance. (3) Technique Needs (Voltammetry vs. EIS): Voltammetric Sensing (DPV / SWV / Amperometry): For heavy metal stripping, pesticide detection, or enzymatic glucose assays, basic DC instruments offer high signal-to-noise at low cost. Label-Free Impedance Biosensors: If detecting antibody-antigen binding or DNA hybridization via charge-transfer resistance (R_ct), an EIS-capable unit running up to 100–200 kHz is required. (4) Batch vs. Drop-Casting Compatibility: If testing directly via drop-casting (10–50 µL on the horizontal strip), a horizontal top-loading slot works best. If using an immersion cell with a stirred vial or deoxygenation line, ensure the instrument provides standard 2 mm pinouts or a flexible ribbon cable lead to the cell lid.
