For battery research and air-sensitive chemistry, a single-chamber glovebox is the standard workstation. It provides a controlled, inert atmosphere (typically Argon or Nitrogen) to keep moisture (H2O) and oxygen (O2) levels below 1 ppm. This ultra-dry, inert environment (typically Argon) is non-negotiable for handling lithium metal, specialized electrolytes (like LiPF6), and moisture-sensitive solid-state materials.
When selecting a single-station glovebox for electrochemical research, the following configurations are standard: (1) Atmosphere Control: Integrated purification column (Copper catalyst for O2 and Molecular Sieve for H2O) with a circulation blower. (2) Material: 304 Stainless Steel chamber with a tempered glass or polycarbonate front window. Avoid acrylic if you are using solvents like NMP, as they can craze the plastic over time. (3) Antechambers: A large cylindrical antechamber (e.g., Φ360 * 600 mm) for equipment like coaters or crimpers, and a mini-antechamber (Φ150 * 300 mm) for rapid sample and tool transfer. (4) Solvent Trap: Essential if you are doing any electrolyte filling or coating. This prevents electrolyte vapors (DMC, DEC, EC) from poisoning the purification catalyst.
