An Automatic Electrode Winder for All-Tab Cylindrical Cells is a specialized machine designed to produce the next generation of high-power batteries, most notably the 4680 format. The all-tab design is a game-changer for thick-electrode battery with high loading.
Standard winders focus on centering the foil. A all-tab winder must manage a "foil overhang" on both the top (cathode) and bottom (anode) of the jelly roll. (1) Precision Edge Alignment: Since the "tabs" are actually the foil edges, the lateral alignment (web guiding) must be accurate to within ±0.1 mm. Any deviation will cause the "petals" to be uneven, making the final current collector welding impossible. (2) Non-Crushing Mandrels: The winding needles are designed to grip the separator and foil without putting pressure on the overhanging "all-tab" edges. (3) Active Tension Control: Because all-tab electrodes are often wider and heavier than standard electrodes, servo-driven tensioners are used to prevent the foil from wrinkling, which would ruin the "all-tab" contact surface.
