For laboratory pouch cell assembly, a heat sealer (also known as a compact pouch sealer) is used to create the final hermetic seals on the top and sides of the Aluminum Laminated Film (ALF). This process requires precise control over temperature, pressure, and sealing time to melt the internal polypropylene (PP) layer of the film without damaging the metal tabs or causing "electrolyte leakage" paths.
Top Sealing (Tab Sealing): This is the critical failure point. The sealer must bond the ALF to the tab sealant (the small strip of plastic pre-attached to your Al/Cu tabs). Always use a soft-face (silicone) bottom blade for top sealing to "wrap" the film around the square edges of the tabs.
Side Sealing: Usually involves two layers of ALF (Polypropylene to Polypropylene). This is the easiest seal to achieve and can be done at a slightly lower temperature.
