A programmable spin coater with a vacuum chuck and integrated radiation heating (typically infrared) represents a highly sophisticated, single-step thin-film fabrication tool. In standard spin coating, films are cast at room temperature and must be manually transferred to a hotplate for baking. A radiation-heated spin coater completely bypasses this step by executing in-situ solvent evaporation and thermal annealing while the substrate is actively spinning or immediately after deceleration, preventing film shrinkage defects and maximizing crystal structure quality (e.g., in perovskites, organic electronics, or sol-gels).
The advantages of the radiation heating are shown below: (1) Suppression of the Marangoni Effect (Rippling): When thick, viscous polymer solutions or multi-component precursor inks are spun, rapid air currents can cause the solvent to evaporate unevenly. This creates surface tension gradients (the Marangoni effect), which lead to radial rippling or "orange-peel" defects. Focused IR radiation provides highly uniform thermal energy across the fluid plane, stabilizing evaporation kinetics and ensuring planar dryness. (2) Enhanced Phase Separation and Crystallization: In organic photovoltaics (OPV) and perovskite solar cells, the nanoscale morphology of the active layer is determined during the spin-casting process. Applying infrared heat during the final drying spin cycles accelerates phase separation and crystallite growth in a controlled manner, bypassing the morphological defects that can occur during a delayed hotplate transfer.
