For pouch cell fabrication, vacuum sealers are specialized pieces of equipment used after electrolyte injection to ensure an air-free environment and prevent leakage. The standard feature of vacuum sealer are shown below: (1) Vacuum Standing (Diffusion): This feature allows the cell to sit under vacuum before sealing. This "standing" time is critical to force the electrolyte to thoroughly saturate (wet) the electrode pores and separator. (2) Adjustable Pump-Down Rate: If the vacuum is pulled too quickly, the electrolyte can boil or be sucked out of the pouch (spillage). High-end units have electronic regulators to control this rate. (3) Vacuum Level: Look for units capable of reaching -95 kPa to -99 kPa (or ~10 Torr) to ensure no moisture or air pockets remain, which would otherwise cause swelling during cycling.
