A lab-scale electrochemical cell for anodization and electropolishing (EP) is designed to perform high-voltage dielectric oxide growth or controlled anodic dissolution on valve metals (Al, Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta) and alloys (stainless steel, Nitinol, Co-Cr).Both processes treat the workpiece as the anode, but they operate under divergent electrochemical regimes: electropolishing drives mass-transport-limited leveling and micro-smoothing, whereas anodization drives field-assisted oxide growth and self-assembled nanopore/nanotube formation.

The choice of operational polarity dictates the defect density, lateral flake size, and electronic quality of the resulting 2D sheets. There are two types of electrochemical intercalation and exfoliation: anodic exfoliation and cathodic exfoliation.

The working mechanism and workflow of the whole process: The two-dimensional bulk film is released from the unwinding roller and go through the first bath to complete the electrochemical intercalation under a high voltage in 10-1000V. Then the intercalated film was further sent to the second batch to complete the electrochemical exfoliation process and obtain the 2D flakes solution.
