A Mini Single-Screw Hot Extruder (frequently referred to as a benchtop or laboratory single-screw extruder) is a compact processing instrument used for polymer research, small-batch testing, quality control, and the creation of custom 3D printing filaments.
The core components are: (1) Feed Hopper: May include a gravity feed or a micro-auger feeder; sometimes features a water-cooled throat to prevent premature polymer bridging or melting at the entrance. (2) Screw & Barrel: Nitride-hardened steel, stainless steel, or bimetallic alloys to resist wear and corrosion from abrasive fillers. Screws can feature standard 3-zone profiles or specialized mixing elements (like Maddock tips). (3) Band / Cartridge Heaters & Thermocouples: Precise PID temperature controllers for each heating zone to maintain stable melt profiles. (4) Die Head: Interchangeable nozzles depending on the desired output format (rod/filament die, ribbon/strip die, or specialized profiles).
The typical applications fields are: (1) Polymer R&D and Compounding: Testing new polymer formulations, masterbatches, bio-plastics, additives, or filler materials (such as carbon fiber or nanoparticle composites) using minimal material. (3) 3D Printer Filament Production: Converting raw polymer pellets or regrind flakes (PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU) into precise 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm filaments. (3) Quality Assurance (QA): Incoming inspection of raw polymer melts, melt flow evaluation, and basic extrudability screening. (4) Downstream Integration: Often paired with miniature chill rolls, water baths, spoolers, or capillary rheometer dies for comprehensive testing lines.
