PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene / Teflon) Milling Balls represent a highly specialized, non-metallic class of grinding media. Because raw PTFE is an elastic fluoropolymer rather than a hard ceramic or steel alloy, its physical properties place it in a unique operational category. It features an extremely low Shore hardness (D56) and a low density (~ 2.14 g/cm3), meaning it cannot be used to violently crush hard rocks or abrasive ceramics. Instead, PTFE media is specified for processing ultra-soft, biological, viscous, or highly corrosive samples where zero trace elemental contamination is mandatory.
The ideal target applications are: (1) Corrosive Wet Chemical Processing: Grinding acidic, caustic, or highly reactive chemical slurries that would rapidly pit, rust, or dissolve standard steel or oxide ceramics. (2) Biological & Cryogenic Homogenization: Pulverizing frozen plant tissues, soft cell structures, or animal tissue matrices inside high-throughput mixer mills (e.g., BeadBlaster setups, where temperatures approach dry-ice or liquid-nitrogen zones. (3) Fluorine Doping & Fluoropolymer Blending: Preparing customized polymer composites or carbon architectures where any trace wear from the media simply introduces trace Carbon (C) and Fluorine (F)—both of which natively match the matrix.
