Titanium (Ti) felt chips (precision-cut discs, squares, or custom geometric pieces of porous titanium fiber felt) represent an advanced 3D fibrous substrate architecture utilized in anode-free (zero-excess) aqueous zinc-ion batteries. By combining the supreme aqueous corrosion resistance of titanium with the expansive, open-pore network of a non-woven fibrous mat, Ti felt bridges the gap between chemical stability and uniform mass transport.

The key structural and electrochemical advantages of Ti felt chips in anode-free cells are: (1) 3D Porous Fibrous Network & Low Local Current Density: Unlike flat titanium foils, a titanium felt matrix consists of an entangled web of microscopic titanium fibers (typically 10-30 um in diameter). This provides a massive electrochemically active surface area that drastically lowers the local current density (mA/cm^2), eliminating the severe electric field hotspots that drive dendritic zinc growth. (2) Supreme Aqueous Corrosion Resistance: In aggressive or mild-acidic zinc salt electrolytes (such as ZnSO4 or Zn(OTf)2), titanium remains inert and structurally robust. It completely avoids the gradual pitting, chemical dissolution, and parasitic side reactions that plague copper substrates over extended cycling. (3) Exceptional Electrolyte Permeability and Mass Transport: The high porosity (often 75% to 85%) of titanium felt allows unhindered, multi-directional electrolyte flux through the entire thickness of the current collector, ensuring that inner and outer fibers participate uniformly in charge transfer. (4) Mechanical Compliance: The spring-like, flexible fibrous structure elastically accommodates the volume expansion and contraction associated with direct zinc electroplating and stripping, preventing delamination from the cell stack.
