Zinc perchlorate hexahydrate (Zn(ClO4)2'6H2O) powder is a highly soluble, highly dissociated electrolyte salt utilized in specialized academic and high-performance research configurations for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs).When dissolved in deionized water, it dissociates cleanly to yield fully hydrated zinc cations (Zn^{2+}) and perchlorate anions (ClO4^-), offering unique physicochemical traits compared to traditional sulfate or triflate systems.

The key electrochemical advantages of Zn(ClO4)2 are: (1) High Ionic Conductivity and Weak Ion Pairing: Perchlorate is a large, symmetrical, weakly coordinating monovalent anion. Unlike sulfate (SO4^{2-}), which forms robust ion pairs and has lower equivalent conductance, ClO4^- exhibits minimal ion association with Zn^{2+}. This results in exceptionally high ionic conductivity and rapid mass transport within the aqueous bulk electrolyte. (2) Low-Temperature Performance: Because perchlorate anions strongly disrupt the hydrogen-bonding network of water and lower the freezing point of the solution, Zn(ClO4)2-based electrolytes are frequently investigated for sub-zero or wide-temperature aqueous zinc batteries, maintaining fluidity and ionic transport where traditional sulfate solutions would freeze or crystallize. (3) Suppression of Basic Salt Precipitation: Similar to triflates, perchlorate systems are far less prone to precipitating insulating basic zinc sulfate by-products (Zn4SO4(OH)6 · xH2O) during localized pH spikes at the cathode-electrolyte interface.
