Add-Ons
High-purity tellurium (Te) powder represents one of the most exotic and high-rate chalcogen cathode materials for advanced aqueous zinc-tellurium (Zn-Te) batteries. As the heaviest stable chalcogen in Group 16, tellurium bridges the gap between traditional insertion-type hosts and conversion cathodes, offering exceptional electrical conductivity and ultra-fast reaction kinetics.
The key electrochemical advantages of the Te powder for aqueous Zn-Te battery are: (1) Reversible Conversion / Alloying Redox Kinetics: In aqueous electrolyte environments (typically containing zinc salts such as ZnSO4 or Zn(CF3SO3)2), elemental tellurium undergoes reversible redox reactions (e.g., transition between elemental Te and zinc telluride phases like ZnTe, or protonated/complexed telluride species depending on pH), delivering a stable working potential plateau of ~0.6–0.9 V vs. Zn/Zn^{2+}. (2) Near-Metallic Electronic Conductivity: Unlike sulfur (10^{-30} S/cm}) or selenium (10^{-5} S/cm), tellurium is a metalloid with high intrinsic semiconductor-to-metallic electrical conductivity (~ 10^{-2} to 10^{2} S/cm} depending on crystal form). This dramatically reduces internal charge-transfer resistance, enabling exceptional rate capabilities and high power density without requiring massive carbon filler additions. (3) High Volumetric Energy Density: With a high tap density (~ 6.24 g/cm3) and a respectable theoretical volumetric and gravimetric capacity, Te allows for compact, high-energy electrode designs.
