The aluminum foil is the industry-standard current collector for the cathode due to its unique electrochemical stability at high voltages. When aluminum is exposed to the electrolyte, it naturally forms a thin, dense film of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and aluminum fluoride (AlF3). This film acts as an electrical insulator that prevents the metal from further corrosion while allowing electrons to "tunnel" through if the layer is thin enough.
The single-side shiny aluminum foils are normally used for single-side electrode coating for coin cell or single-layer pouch cell due to strong coating adhesion with matte size.
