PTSI (p-Toluenesulfonyl isocyanate, C8H7NO3S) is a highly reactive functional additive utilized in advanced lithium-ion battery electrolytes. Featuring both an electron-withdrawing sulfonyl group and a highly reactive isocyanate (-N=C=O) moiety, PTSI serves a dual purpose as an aggressive chemical scavenger and a film-forming interphase stabilizer—particularly in high-voltage cells.
The key functional roles of PTSI as battery electrolyte additive are shown below: (1) Ultra-Reactive Moisture & Acid Scavenging: PTSI reacts spontaneously with trace water (H2O) and protic impurities (such as free acids or hydroxyl groups) present in the electrolyte. By chemically neutralizing moisture, it prevents the catalytic hydrolysis of standard lithium salts (like LiPF6), stopping the formation of corrosive hydrofluoric acid (HF) that otherwise attacks active materials and current collectors. (2) High-Voltage Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) Formation: PTSI is especially prominent in high-potential systems (such as high-voltage spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O}4 operating at ~ 4.7-4.9 V). It undergoes preferential electrochemical oxidation to build a stable, robust passivating film on the cathode surface, mitigating high-voltage interfacial side reactions and suppressing transition metal dissolution. (3) Anode SEI Enhancement: The sulfonyl and nitrogen-containing fragments also participate in early reductive decomposition at the negative electrode, helping to construct a hybrid inorganic-organic Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) that improves long-term cycling stability.
