Tetravinylsilane (TVSi) is a tetra-functional organosilicon additive featuring four reactive vinyl groups (-CH=CH2) bound to a central silicon atom (Si(CH=CH2)4). It serves as a cross-linking film-former, cathode passivator, and dendrite-suppressing interphase builder in non-aqueous electrolytes for lithium-ion (LIBs), silicon-anode, lithium-metal, and post-lithium batteries. The core functional roles & electrochemical advantages are shown below:

(1) High-Density Cross-Linked Polymeric Interphase (SEI & CEI): TVSi contains four symmetrically arranged, electron-rich vinyl double bonds. During initial formation or electrochemical cycling, TVSi undergoes multi-directional radical polymerization at lower reduction potentials on the anode (~ 1.2–1.4 V vs. Li/Li+) and higher oxidation potentials on the cathode. This yields a 3D cross-linked poly-siloxane/poly-alkene network across both electrode surfaces that is significantly more thermally and mechanically resilient than linear polymer interphases formed by mono- or di-vinyl additives.

(2) High-Voltage Cathode Passivation & Transition Metal Retention: On high-voltage nickel-rich cathodes (NMC811, NCMA) or high-voltage cobalt oxides (>4.4 V vs. Li/Li+), TVSi oxidizes to form a silane-derived Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI). This layer blocks catalytic surface defects, preventing transition-metal leaching (Ni^{3+}/Ni}^{4+}, Mn^{3+}) and suppressing parasitic oxidation of carbonate co-solvents (EC, EMC).

(3) Homogeneous Li+ Flux & Dendrite Mitigation: The rigid yet flexible organosilicon network acts as an ion-sieve, leveling local electric field variations on alkali-metal anodes. This promotes uniform Li+ deposition, suppressing dendritic nucleation and improving Coulombic efficiency in lithium-metal batteries.
