Nickel (Ni) foil is a critical component for high-performance electrochemical systems. While aluminum and copper are the standard for typical lithium-ion batteries, nickel is the premier choice for alkaline electrolyzers, solid-state batteries, and fuel cells due to its exceptional stability in harsh, non-acidic environments. Its main features and advantages are detailed presented below:

(1) Alkaline Stability: It is one of the few metals that can withstand concentrated potassium hydroxide (KOH), making it the industry standard for alkaline water electrolyzers.

(2) Solid-State Compatibility: In sulfide-based solid-state batteries, copper foil reacts with the electrolyte. Nickel does not, ensuring a stable electrical path for the life of the battery.

(3) High-Voltage Resistance: Nickel naturally forms a thin, protective oxide layer that resists corrosion at high potentials, which is vital for high-voltage cathodes and fuel cell bipolar plates.

(4) Superior Conductivity: While not as conductive as copper, it offers a much better balance of electrical flow and chemical resistance than stainless steel or titanium in alkaline media.
