Nickel mesh is a critical component in various electrochemical energy devices, primarily serving as a current collector and electrode substrate. Its widespread use is due to a unique combination of electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and exceptional resistance to corrosion, particularly in alkaline environments.
(1) In Battery application, nickel mesh provides the electrical pathway between the external circuit and the active electrode materials inside the battery. Its porous structure allows for good bonding with electrode pastes and facilitates ion movement.
(2) In Alkaline electrolyzer, it acts as the structural backbone and electrical conductor for both the anode (where oxygen is produced) and the cathode (where hydrogen is produced). The mesh is typically coated with electrocatalysts to facilitate the gas evolution reactions. It also serves as a porous transport layer, allowing the electrolyte to reach the catalyst surface and generated gases to escape efficiently.
(3) In fuel cell application, nickel mesh is used as a current collector screen to draw electricity from the electrode. It also functions as a flow field structure to distribute fuel and oxidant gases evenly over the electrode surfaces and as a mechanical support grid for membranes and gas diffusion layers (GDLs).
