Add-Ons
Adiponitrile (commonly designated as ADN or hexanedinitrile) is a specialized aliphatic dinitrile organic compound engineered as a high-voltage, high-safety solvent and interphase-stabilizing additive for advanced lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. Unlike its shorter-chain dinitrile counterpart succinonitrile (SN), which is a solid at room temperature, ADN remains a liquid across a wide operational temperature window, making it exceptionally attractive for liquid electrolyte formulations.
Its functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) High-Voltage Cathode & CEI Passivation: The lone electron pairs on the nitrogen atoms coordinate strongly with transition metal dissolution sites on high-voltage oxide cathodes (such as NMC811 or LiCoO2). This forms a robust, passivating Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) that suppresses oxidative solvent decomposition above 4.3 V–4.6 V. (2) Aluminum Current Collector Protection: ADN is particularly well-known for its ability to mitigate anodic dissolution and pitting corrosion of the aluminum current collector at high upper-cutoff voltages, a critical failure mode in high-energy cells. (3) Thermal Safety & Volatility Suppression: With an exceptionally high boiling point (~295 °C) and a high flash point, ADN drastically reduces vapor pressure and suppresses flammability hazards during thermal abuse or overcharge testing.
Its main electrochemical application domains are: (1) High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries: Integrated as a co-solvent or functional additive in master formulations paired with nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes to extend cycle life and minimize capacity fade. (2) Wide-Temperature and High-Power Systems: Because of its low freezing point and broad liquid range, it is utilized in electrolyte designs requiring stable ionic conductivity under extreme environmental conditions.
