Tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) orthoformate (commonly designated as TFEO) is a highly fluorinated specialty orthoester engineered for advanced energy storage systems. Featuring a central orthoformate carbon bonded to three electron-withdrawing 2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy groups, TFEO functions as an elite non-coordinating diluent and interphase-directing co-solvent for high-voltage lithium-metal and lithium-ion batteries.
Its main functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Localized High-Concentration Electrolyte (LHCE) Diluent: TFEO acts as an inert structural diluent that lowers bulk viscosity and decreases electrolyte costs while keeping the inner solvation sheath intact, preserving the high ionic transference numbers of concentrated salt clusters. (2) Robust Multi-Facial Interphase (SEI/CEI) Construction: Due to its tailored reduction and oxidation behavior, TFEO preferentially decomposes to assist in building a dense, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on alkali metal anodes and a thick, LiF-rich Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) on high-voltage transition metal oxides. (3) Suppression of Cation Mixing and Transition Metal Dissolution: The stable CEI film generated by TFEO effectively mitigates surface phase transitions (such as layered-to-rock-salt structural degradation) and suppresses transition-metal dissolution during prolonged high-voltage cycling.
Its main electrochemical applications are: (1) High-Voltage Lithium-Metal Batteries (LMBs): Paired with nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes (e.g., LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 or NMC811) operating above 4.3 V, enabling extended cycle life under practical lean-electrolyte conditions. (2) Anode-Free and High-Energy Configurations: Deployed to suppress dendrite formation and lower parasitic side reactions on reactive lithium metal or high-surface-area current collectors..
