Add-Ons
[EMIM]OTf (1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate) is a well-known room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) combining an aromatic imidazolium cation with the fluorinated sulfonate triflate (CF3SO3^-) anion. By pairing a fluid, low-viscosity imidazolium base with a relatively stable and highly soluble triflate anion, this ionic liquid offers favorable transport kinetics, though its application in battery systems is constrained by the inherent limitations of the aromatic ring.
The key physicochemical & electrochemical characteristics are: (1) Low Viscosity & High Ionic Conductivity: Compared to bulkier cyclic ammonium or piperidinium RTILs, [EMIM]OTf exhibits remarkably low viscosity and high ionic conductivity at ambient temperatures, facilitating rapid ion transport and minimizing internal cell polarization. (2) Good Thermal & Chemical Stability: Like other ionic liquids, it is non-flammable, possesses negligible vapor pressure, and remains thermally stable up to high temperatures, mitigating the volatility and fire risks associated with traditional organic carbonate solvents. (3) Anion Compatibility: The triflate anion is chemically stable, resists hydrolysis compared to PF6^- or BF4^- (meaning no hazardous HF generation from trace moisture), and forms stable conductive solutions with various alkali metal triflate salts (e.g., LiOTf or NaOTf).
