Ethyl propionate (EP) is a low-viscosity, low-melting-point carboxylate ester widely utilized as a co-solvent in wide-temperature, fast-charging, and abuse-tolerant non-aqueous electrolytes.

The main physical features of the EP solvent are: (1) Melting and Boiling Points: EP features a melting point of -73.9°C and a higher boiling point of 99°C (compared to ethyl acetate's 77°C), offering a more favorable volatility and flash-point safety profile. (2) Viscosity: Exhibits a low bulk viscosity (~ 0.55 cP at room temperature), maintaining fluid dynamics and rapid Li+ solvation sheath reorganization at sub-zero temperatures. (3) Dielectric Constant: Possesses a modest relative permittivity (~ 6.0), requiring high-permittivity cyclic carbonates (e.g., EC) or elevated salt concentrations to ensure effective lithium salt dissociation.

The critical advantages in battery electrolytes are: (1) Wide-Temperature Operation: EP-containing electrolyte blends retain high ionic conductivity and reversible capacity across extreme thermal ranges, frequently deployed in environments down to -40°C and below. (2) Enhanced Thermal & Volatility Safety: Its higher boiling point and reduced vapor pressure relative to shorter-chain esters (like methyl acetate or ethyl acetate) mitigate gassing and thermal runaway risks under high-rate abuse. (3) Superior Rate Capability: Low viscosity and rapid ion diffusion kinetics support high continuous C-rates and fast-charging protocols.
