Succinonitrile (commonly designated as SN or butane-1,4-dinitrile) is a specialized dinitrile organic compound engineered as a high-permittivity, high-safety solvent and interphase-stabilizing additive for advanced lithium-ion, solid-state, and high-voltage energy storage systems. By incorporating dual terminal nitrile groups (-CN) separated by a short aliphatic backbone, SN provides unique electrochemical and thermal stability profiles distinct from conventional carbonate or ether matrices.
Its functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) High-Voltage Cathode Passivation: The lone electron pairs on the nitrogen atoms of the nitrile groups coordinate strongly with transition metal dissolution sites on high-voltage cathode surfaces (such as NMC or LiCoO2). This forms a protective, passivating film that suppresses parasitic oxidative decomposition above 4.3 V. (2) Solid-State & Quasi-Solid Electrolyte Matrix: Because of its high melting point and robust thermal stability, SN is frequently deployed as a primary or plasticizing matrix in semi-solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) and composite solid-state electrolytes, facilitating high ionic conductivity without volatilization risks. (3) Thermal Safety & Flame Resistance: The exceptionally high boiling point (~265 °C) and lack of volatile flammable alkyl chains drastically reduce vapor pressure and suppress ignition risks during thermal abuse or overcharge scenarios.
Its main electrochemical application domains are: (1) High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries: Integrated as a functional co-solvent or high-voltage additive to prevent electrolyte oxidation and transition metal cross-over in cells operating at aggressive upper-cutoff voltages. (2) Quasi-Solid-State Lithium Batteries: Used alongside polymer hosts (such as PVDF-HFP or PEO) to form gel polymer electrolytes that balance mechanical flexibility with high ambient ionic conductivity.
