The alumina and PVDF-coated PE separator is an advanced multi-layer membrane designed for high-energy density and high-safety lithium-ion batteries. (1) The PE base provides the essential thermal shutdown feature. If the battery overheats, the PE melts at ~135°C to block ion flow. (2) The alumina ceramic prevents thermal shrinkage. While raw PE would shrivel after melting, the alumina particles stay solid (up to 2000°C), keeping the electrodes physically separated. (3) PVDF has excellent affinity for liquid electrolytes. It acts like a "glue" that not only holds the ceramic to the PE but also helps the electrolyte soak into the separator, lowering internal resistance.
The composite separator combines above features and delivers the following advantages: (1) Superior thermal safety; (2) Enhanced puncture resistance; (3) Stronger adhesion; (4) High voltage stability.
