PP (Polypropylene) separator acts as both a physical gatekeeper and a safety fuse within the battery cell: (1) Electrical Isolation: It is a non-conductive polymer that blocks electrons from moving directly between electrodes. (2) Ionic Conductivity: It contains millions of nanometer-sized pores (typically 20–40 nm in diameter) that are "wetted" by the liquid electrolyte, enabling ions to shuttle back and forth during charge and discharge. (3) Mechanical Buffer: It must be strong enough to resist "puncture" from metallic dendrites (lithium needles) that can grow from the anode and cause fires.
