A hierarchical perfluoro-sulfonic/carboxylic acid composite cation-exchange membrane represents the pinnacle of separator technology for industrial chlor-alkali electrolysis. Modern high-performance membranes (such as advanced Nafion or Flemion grades) utilize this engineered, graded architecture to simultaneously optimize bulk conductivity and extreme chemical rejection.

Unlike single-layer polymer films, these advanced membranes feature a multi-zone, chemically asymmetric profile built on a robust fluorocarbon backbone: (1) Reinforced ePTFE Substrate: An embedded micro-porous expanded polytetrafluoroethylene mesh runs through the core, providing exceptional mechanical tensile strength and preventing membrane creep or dimensional distortion under high hydraulic and osmotic pressures. (2) Thick Anode-Facing Sulfonic Acid Layer (PFSA): Comprising the bulk of the membrane thickness, this layer features perfluorosulfonic acid groups (-SO3H). It provides low electrical resistance, high water uptake, and rapid transport channels for sodium ions (Na+) coming from the saturated brine compartment. (3) Thin Cathode-Facing Carboxylic Acid Layer (PFCA): A specialized, dense surface layer facing the high-concentration caustic side, functionalized with perfluorocarboxylic acid groups (-COOH).

The key advantages of the composite CEM are: (1) Ultra-High Current Efficiency: Exceptional Donnan exclusion across the hierarchical boundary maintains current efficiencies consistently above 93% to 96%. (2) Minimized Cell Voltage & Energy Consumption: Careful control of layer thickness and equivalent weight keeps area electrical resistance low, directly reducing Joule heating and electric power consumption during high-amperage industrial runs (3000 to 5000 A/m2). (3) Superior Chemical and Oxidative Resilience: The fully fluorinated C-F backbone withstands continuous exposure to wet chlorine gas (Cl2), hypochlorous acid, nascent oxygen, and hot concentrated caustic solutions without polymer chain degradation.
