Ethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate (EGDMA) is a bifunctional methacrylic monomer (C}10H14O4) featuring two reactive methacrylate groups bridged by a flexible ethylene glycol segment. In advanced energy storage research, EGDMA is widely utilized as a standard crosslinking agent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ polymerized solid/gel battery systems, offering an optimal balance between structural crosslink density, chain flexibility, and electrolyte retention.

The main functional roles of EGDMA as crosslinking monomer for GPEs are: (1) Controlled 3D Network & Liquid Immobilization: Upon thermal or UV-initiated radical polymerization (using initiators like AIBN, BPO, or photoinitiators), EGDMA copolymerizes with linear host polymers (such as PMMA, PVDF-HFP, or MMA) to form a stable 3D crosslinked network. This permanently traps organic liquid electrolytes, eliminating free-flowing leakage while preserving high ionic mobility. (2) Enhanced Ionic Conductivity Retention: Because EGDMA provides a moderate crosslink density without over-constricting the polymer chains, the resulting gel electrolyte maintains high segmental motion, achieving room-temperature ionic conductivities routinely exceeding 10^{-3} S/cm. (3) Robust In Situ Interfacial Wetting: Used in in situ cell integration, the low-viscosity precursor thoroughly wets separator pores and electrode microstructures before curing, drastically reducing interfacial resistance and improving long-term cycle stability.
