Add-Ons
Pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA, >99.0%) is a multi-functional acrylic monomer heavily utilized as a high-performance crosslinking agent in advanced Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ solidified battery systems. Because of its trifunctional molecular architecture, PETA rapidly forms a dense, highly interconnected 3D polymer network that immobilizes liquid electrolytes, completely eliminates liquid leakage, and dramatically enhances the mechanical and thermal stability of high-energy lithium and sodium battery systems.
Its main structural and functional features are: (1) Chemical Structure: Features a central pentaerythritol core branching into three reactive acrylate (CH2=CHCOO-) groups. (2) High Functionality (f = 3): Unlike linear or bifunctional monomers (such as PEGDA or standard mono-acrylates), PETA’s tri-functionality allows it to act as an immediate branching and node-forming network builder, achieving rapid gelation and tight mesh-size control. (3) Solubility & Reactivity: Highly soluble in standard aprotic battery solvents (EC, PC, DEC, DMC, EMC) and readily polymerizes via free-radical mechanisms using thermal initiators (e.g., AIBN, BPO) or photo-initiators (e.g., HMPP, Irgacure). (4) Thermal & Dimensional Resilience: Forms a tightly crosslinked matrix that resists thermal creep, prevents local softening at elevated cell temperatures, and safely restrains lithium dendrite growth.
The core advantages of PETA as monomer for GPEs are: (1) Rapid 3D Network Formation & Liquid Immobilization: Upon thermal or UV activation inside the cell stack, PETA molecules quickly crosslink into a dense, sponge-like polymer skeleton that traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes. This transforms a free-flowing liquid cell into a dimensionally stable, quasi-solid-state system without sacrificing ionic pathways. (2) Suppression of Polysulfide Shuttling & Parasitic Side Reactions: In sulfur-based or high-voltage chemistries, the dense network architecture created by PETA restricts the diffusion path of large intermediate species (such as polysulfides in Li-S systems), while protecting the electrolyte from continuous catalytic decomposition at aggressive electrode surfaces. (3) Enhanced Mechanical Interfacial Contact: In situ polymerization using PETA starts from a low-viscosity liquid precursor that thoroughly wets micro-pores in separators (e.g., glass fiber or PP/PE) and porous electrode structures. Once cured, it eliminates interfacial resistance gaps, maintaining intimate contact during volume fluctuations associated with charge-discharge cycling.
