Add-Ons
Trimethylolpropane Trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) is a trifunctional methacrylic monomer (C18H28O6) featuring three reactive methacrylate (CH2=C(CH3COO-) groups radiating from a central trimethylolpropane core. In advanced energy storage research, TMPTMA is widely utilized as a high-performance crosslinking agent for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and in situ polymerized solid/gel systems, delivering exceptional thermal stability, high crosslink density, and robust mechanical reinforcement for lithium and sodium metal batteries.
The main functional roles of TMPMA as crosslinking monomer for GPEs are: (1) Robust 3D Network & Liquid Immobilization: Upon thermal or UV-initiated free-radical polymerization (using initiators like AIBN, BPO, or photoinitiators), TMPTMA rapidly crosslinks to form a dense polymer mesh that permanently traps and immobilizes organic liquid electrolytes. This converts a free-flowing liquid cell into a dimensionally stable gel without compromising ionic conductivity. (2) Suppression of Dendrite Penetration: The high crosslink density and elastic rigidity imparted by TMPTMA's trifunctional nodes create a mechanically robust barrier that resists sharp lithium dendrite propagation during fast-charging cycles, significantly improving safety against internal short circuits. (3) Enhanced Cathode Interfacial Compatibility: When used in in situ polymerization protocols, the low-viscosity precursor solution thoroughly infiltrates porous electrodes and separators. Upon curing, it eliminates interfacial resistance gaps and forms a stable passivation layer that mitigates parasitic oxidation at aggressive high-voltage cathode interfaces.
