2,2,3,3-Tetrafluoropropyl methacrylate (TFPMA) is a specialized fluorinated monomer (C7H8F4O2) featuring a polymerizable methacrylate head group attached to a short, fluorinated alkyl ester side chain (-CH2CF2CHF2). In advanced energy storage research, TFPMA is utilized as a high-performance functional co-monomer for Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs). By copolymerizing into the 3D network, it introduces a controlled concentration of fluorine into the polymer matrix, improving oxidative stability and facilitating the formation of a robust, protective interphase in high-voltage lithium and sodium metal batteries.
The main functional roles of the TFPMA in GPEs are: (1) Fluorine-Rich Interphase (SEI/CEI Passivation): Upon initial electrochemical formation or thermal curing, the fluorinated ester side chains of TFPMA undergo controlled reductive and oxidative decomposition, contributing to the formation of a dense, inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) on anodes and Cathode Electrolyte Interphase (CEI) on high-voltage cathodes. This interphase is rich in lithium fluoride (LiF) and fluorophosphates. (2) Suppression of High-Voltage Electrolyte Co-Intercalation: By reinforcing the polymer mesh at the electrode interfaces, TFPMA-derived segments shield the bulk carbonate electrolyte from catalytic decomposition, transition-metal dissolution, and gas evolution at elevated voltages (such as 4.6 V LCO or ultra-high-nickel NCM systems). (3) Balanced Mechanical and Ionic Properties: Unlike bulky, highly crystalline fluoropolymers that can impede ionic transport, TFPMA copolymerizes smoothly into flexible crosslinked networks, maintaining high room-temperature ionic conductivities when plasticized with liquid electrolytes.
