A polyimide (PI) coated polyethylene (PE) separator is a composite membrane that combines the safety "shutdown" feature of traditional polyethylene with the extreme heat resistance of polyimide It is typically created by coating a thin layer of thermally stable polyimide (or a polyimide/ceramic blend) onto one or both sides of a standard microporous PE film. This dual-layer approach solves the biggest weakness of lithium-ion batteries: thermal shrinkage. The good heat management is reflected in two sides: (1) Thermal Shutdown (~135°C); (2) Structural Integrity (>200°C). Moreover, it also displays excellent features of superior electrolyte wetting, dendrite blocking, and oxidation resistance.
