Integrating dry electrode manufacturing with anode-free pouch cell architecture using an LiMn0.6Fe0.2PO4 (LMFP) cathode and a Cu/C (carbon-coated copper) current collector represents a cutting-edge approach to maximizing both volumetric and gravimetric energy density in lithium-ion batteries.
The cell architecture & features are summarized here: (1) Zero-Excess Negative Electrode: The negative side starts as a bare Cu/C current collector. During the first charge cycle, lithium ions extracted from the high-voltage (~ 4.1 V) LMFP cathode migrate through the separator and electroplate directly onto the carbon-coated copper surface. (2) Maximizing Volumetric Efficiency: Removing the bulk anode active material and copper foil thickness slims down the cell stack, dramatically boosting both volumetric (Wh/L) and gravimetric (Wh/kg) energy density compared to conventional design.
