Lithium squarate (Li2C4O4), also known as dilithium squarate, is an emerging organic sacrificial lithium salt used for the pre-lithiation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and lithium-ion capacitors (LICs). It is considered a "green" and high-efficiency alternative to inorganic supplements like Li5FeO4 (LFO) because it decomposes during the first charge into environmentally benign gaseous byproducts (CO or CO2) and lithium ions, leaving behind virtually no dead weight or metal residues. The key features of Li2C4O4 as lithium pre-lithiation additive are: (1) No Dead Weight: Upon oxidation, the squarate anion (C4O4)2-) decomposes into gases. This means you gain lithium ions to build a stable SEI layer without adding inactive mass that would otherwise lower the battery's overall energy density. (2) SEI Stabilization: Beyond just providing lithium, its decomposition products help form a less soluble and more stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI). This leads to better capacity retention over hundreds of cycles. (3) High Efficiency: Adding just 2.5% to 5% weight can improve first-cycle efficiency by 5% to 15% in high-capacity systems like silicon-graphite anodes.
