Cesium hexafluorophosphate (CsPF6) is an inorganic salt widely investigated as a specialized ionic electrolyte additive for advanced lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries. By introducing heavy, large-radius alkali metal cations (Cs+) alongside compatible hexafluorophosphate (PF6^-) anions into standard carbonate master electrolytes, CsPF6 enables precise control over interphase formation chemistry and surface electrostatics.

The main functional roles in electrolyte engineering are: (1) Solvation Sheath & SEI Direction: Due to the strong preferential coordination of Cs+ with cyclic carbonates (such as Ethylene Carbonate, EC), the presence of cesium alters the primary lithium-ion solvation structure. This shifts the reduction potential of the solvated complex, promoting the preferential early-stage decomposition of the inner sheath to build an ultrathin, compact, and inorganic-rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI). (2) Self-Healing Electrostatic Shield (SHES) Mechanism: In lithium-metal systems, Cs+ ions—possessing a lower reduction potential relative to Li+—accumulate electrostatically around initial microscopic surface protuberances or hot spots. This localized positive charge builds a transient electrostatic shield that repels incoming Li+ ions, effectively mitigating dendritic growth and smoothing lithium electrodeposition. (3) Suppression of Co-Intercalation: By stabilizing the interphase on standard carbonaceous hosts, CsPF6 prevents solvent co-intercalation and graphite exfoliation, notably unlocking the use of wider-temperature solvents like propylene carbonate (PC).
