Graphene-coated aluminum foil is a cutting-edge current collector technology designed to address the specific chemical and mechanical challenges of Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The roles of graphene coating mainly shown below:
(1) Enhanced electrical conductivity: Graphene provides a highly conductive, 2D interface that ensures rapid electron transport from the sulfur cathode to the aluminum substrate.
(2) Polysulfide Trapping (The Shuttle Effect): Graphene layers (especially if functionalized or "doped") act as a physical and chemical barrier. They help anchor these polysulfides at the cathode, keeping the active material where it belongs.
(3) Protection Against Corrosion: The chemically inert nature of graphene protects the underlying aluminum foil from electrolyte attack, extending the cycle life of the battery.
