In metal-gas battery research (such as Li-O2, Zn-air, or Na-CO2), Swagelok cells are favored for their ability to maintain a strictly air-tight seal while allowing for the precise introduction of reactant gases. Unlike standard battery testing, metal-gas systems require a gas headspace and a mechanism to deliver oxygen or other gases to the cathode. The cathode side typically uses a hollow tube or a plunger with a center-drilled hole, which allows the gas to reach the back of a Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE).
