Add-Ons
Spiro-(1,1'-bipyrrolidinium) tetrafluoroborate—commonly abbreviated as SBPBF4 (CAS Number: 156410-09-2)—is a high-performance quaternary ammonium salt featuring a rigid, bicyclic spirocyclic cation. It is widely recognized as a premium alternative to traditional linear quaternary ammonium salts (like TEABF4) for demanding organic supercapacitor (EDLC) applications, particularly where high-temperature stability is required.
The SBP+ cation consists of two pyrrolidinium rings sharing a central quaternary spiro-nitrogen atom. This rigid, compact, and symmetrical bicyclic structure restricts internal molecular rotation, yielding a higher melting point, superior thermal stability, and enhanced resistance to structural degradation at elevated voltages compared to flexible chain cations. It exhibits exceptional thermal stability (often stable up to ~250°C) and an expanded electrochemical stability window, supporting high operating voltages (frequently evaluated up to 3.0 V to 3.2 V) without oxidative decomposition.
Like TEABF4, SBPBF4 is formulated as a solute in anhydrous aprotic organic solvents: (i) Acetonitrile (AN) Based Recipe (High-Rate / Standard High-Voltage) with 1.0 M SBPBF4 dissolved in anhydrous Acetonitrile (AN), which delivers high ionic conductivity and low viscosity. However, because SBP+ has a slightly larger and more rigid hydrodynamic radius than TEA+, conductivities in AN are marginally lower than equivalent TEABF4 solutions, yet they offer improved voltage withstand capabilities. (ii) Propylene Carbonate (PC) Based Recipe (High-Temperature / Extended Life) with 1.0 M SBPBF4 dissolved in anhydrous Propylene Carbonate (PC). This is one of the most prominent formulations for high-temperature supercapacitors. The combination of the rigid SBP+ cation and the high-boiling PC solvent suppresses gas generation and electrolyte breakdown under accelerated aging tests at elevated temperatures (e.g., 65°C to 85°C).
