Pairing the O3-type NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 (NFM111) layered transition-metal oxide cathode with a carbon-modified copper current collector (Cu/C) in an anode-free dry pouch cell architecture represents an advanced, high-energy-density configuration for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). By eliminating the traditional graphite or hard carbon negative electrode active material and electroplating sodium directly onto the Cu/C current collector during the initial charge, this design maximizes both volumetric and gravimetric energy density while leveraging Earth-abundant, low-cost transition metals (Ni, Fe, Mn).
