Add-Ons
Photoinitiator 819DW is a specialized, ready-to-use aqueous dispersion (typically containing ~45% active ingredient) of Phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (BAPO / Irgacure 819). In advanced battery materials research, 819DW is utilized for the UV-curing of water-borne, aqueous Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and hydrogel systems (such as those used in aqueous zinc-ion or sodium-ion energy storage devices). It bridges the high-performance deep-curing efficiency of standard BAPO with complete compatibility in water-rich or aqueous-processable electrolyte formulations.
Its main features are: (1) Aqueous Dispersion Form: Unlike neat BAPO powder—which is hydrophobic and requires organic co-solvents to disperse evenly in water-based mixtures—819DW is formulated as a stable liquid emulsion. This allows seamless incorporation into aqueous polymer precursors without phase separation or agglomeration. (2) Bisacylphosphine Oxide Chemistry: Retains the symmetrical core structure of BAPO, undergoing unimolecular $\alpha$-cleavage upon light absorption to generate four active radicals per molecule (two benzoyl and two phosphonyl radicals), yielding exceptionally high initiation efficiency. (3) Long-Wavelength UV/Violet Absorption: Absorbs strongly across the near-UV and violet spectrum (370 nm to 420 nm). This enables efficient photopolymerization through thick separator matrices, glass fiber papers, and water-swollen hydrogel layers. (4) Compatibility with Water-Borne Polymers: Engineered specifically for aqueous media, making it ideal for hydrophilic binders, natural biopolymers, and water-soluble synthetic macromers.
