HCPK (1-Hydroxycyclohexyl Phenyl Ketone)—widely known commercially as Irgacure 184 (C13H16O2)—is a high-efficiency Type I non-yellowing photoinitiator utilized extensively in advanced energy storage research for the UV-curing of Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs) and solid-state polymer electrolytes. By absorbing ultraviolet radiation, HCPK undergoes rapid cleavage to generate active free radicals, initiating the prompt polymerization of acrylate and methacrylate network precursors directly within separator membranes and electrode assemblies.

Its functional roles in GPEs synthesis are: (1) Rapid In Situ UV-Gelation in Sealed Cells: HCPK enables the rapid conversion of low-viscosity liquid electrolyte/monomer precursors (such as PEGDA, TPGDA, HDDA, or HDDMA blended with carbonate solvents and lithium/sodium salts) into dimensionally stable, crosslinked gel networks within seconds to minutes under UV exposure. (2) Elimination of Thermal Stress & Side Reactions: Replaces traditional thermal radical initiators (such as AIBN or BPO) with a clean, room-temperature light-triggered mechanism, avoiding thermal expansion mismatches between cell components and preventing premature thermal decomposition of volatile components. (3) High Interfacial Uniformity: Because HCPK dissolves uniformly into the liquid electrolyte phase without micro-scale phase separation, free radicals are generated homogeneously across separator pores and electrode microstructures, establishing a uniform 3D polymer mesh with high ionic conductivity (>10^{-3} S/cm).
