When selecting a cation-exchange membrane (CEM) for wastewater electrodialysis (ED), durability goes beyond standard electrical resistance. Industrial and municipal wastewater streams present severe challenges, including organic fouling, surfactant adsorption, mineral scaling (e.g., Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+}), and aggressive chemical cleaning-in-place (CIP) cycles.

The key performance traits for wastewater durability: (1) Anti-Fouling Surface Morphology: Smooth, hydrophilic surfaces minimize the electrostatic or hydrophobic adsorption of foulants (such as humic acids, proteins, and linear alkylbenzene sulfonates) that cause electrical resistance to spike during long-term runs. (2) Dimensional Stability Across Osmotic Shifts: Wastewater feeds frequently experience drastic concentration fluctuations. A robust CEM must resist excessive swelling and shrinking to prevent mechanical stress, micro-cracking, or seal leakage in the stack. (3) Resistance to Chemical Cleaning (CIP): Must withstand frequent exposure to acids (HCl, citric acid), bases (NaOH), and oxidizing sterilizing agents (such as dilute hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide) without polymer degradation.
