A Horizontal Planetary Ball Mill represents a structural evolution of the traditional vertical planetary mill. While vertical mills are the standard for benchtop R&D, horizontal configurations are often preferred for larger-scale pilot production or when dealing with slurries that have a high tendency to settle, such as the high-solids NMP-based cathode slurries. In a horizontal mill, the grinding jars are placed horizontally on the sun wheel. As the system rotates, the force of gravity is constantly changing direction relative to the centrifugal forces, creating a unique "3D" grinding path.

The horizontal orientation solves several specific issues encountered during the preparation of advanced battery materials: (1) Elimination of Sedimentation: In vertical jars, heavy active material particles (like NMC or LFP) can settle at the bottom of the jar during long milling cycles, leading to non-uniform grinding. In a horizontal mill, gravity prevents "dead zones" at the bottom, ensuring the entire batch is processed equally. (2) Enhanced Mixing Energy: The combination of the planetary motion and the constant "tumbling" caused by the horizontal axis creates higher kinetic energy. This is particularly effective for dispersing Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs), which are notoriously difficult to unbundle. (3) Thermal Management: Horizontal designs often allow for easier integration of liquid cooling systems across the jars, which is critical when processing temperature-sensitive ion-exchange membranes or PTFE-based dry powders.
