A ball-type dry pellet pressing die (often called a spherical pellet die set) is engineered to compact loose dry powders into near-spherical, hemispherical, or ball-shaped solid pellets rather than flat cylindrical discs.

Unlike flat-faced punch dies, a ball die uses concave, hemispherical indentations machined directly into the ends of the upper and lower anvils (punches): (1) Hemispherical Anvils: The top and bottom punches feature precision-polished concave hemispherical cavities. When driven together inside the die sleeve, they form a near-complete spherical chamber. (2) Equatorial Band: Because uniaxial force is applied vertically, a perfectly sealed sphere cannot be ejected easily without splitting. The die produces a ball with a very thin flat band around its equator where the two anvil faces approach each other. (3) Die Sleeve (Core): High-tensile tool steel (e.g., Cr12MoV, alloy steel, or WC-lined) guiding the punches to prevent lateral misalignment under load.
