For lab-scale tape casting (also known as doctor blade coating), the most effective systems combine a high-precision vacuum chuck to hold the substrate flat and an integrated heating element to control the drying process. These features are critical for producing uniform, crack-free films for battery electrodes, fuel cell membranes, or ceramic tapes.
The key selection criteria of an appropriate tape casting coater: (1) Vacuum Bed: Essential for keeping thin foils (like Copper or Aluminum) or polymer films from wrinkling during the coating stroke. (2) Heating Method: Top heating (infrared or convection) dries the slurry surface first, while bottom heating (heated bed) transfers heat through the substrate. (3) Coating Speed: Look for variable speed control (typically 0–100 mm/s) to match the rheology of your specific slurry. (4) Doctor Blade Compatibility: Most of these units are compatible with adjustable micrometer doctor blades or fixed-gap film applicators.
